Selling on Etsy with ResaleStudio
This guide explains what ResaleStudio can and cannot do with an Etsy shop, what Etsy needs from you for each listing, and how to connect, disconnect and remove your data. Everything ResaleStudio does in your shop goes through Etsy’s official API (application programming interface, the route Etsy provides for other software), within the limits Etsy sets. Etsy is a marketplace for handmade items, vintage items and craft supplies, so check that what you sell qualifies before you connect a shop.
Etsy limitations at a glance
| Feature | On Etsy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sending offers to buyers | Not available | The Etsy API does not support it. |
| Automation (relisting, sharing/bumping) | Not available on Etsy | Etsy does not offer these features; ResaleStudio does not add them. |
What Etsy allows
Etsy accepts three kinds of items: handmade items that you made or designed, vintage items that are at least 20 years old, and craft supplies. Mass-produced goods and new branded products do not belong on Etsy, however well they sell elsewhere, and listing them can get a shop suspended.
Opening a shop costs a one-off, non-refundable setup fee, and Etsy charges listing and transaction fees on top. Read Etsy’s current policy and fee schedule before you open a shop or connect one to ResaleStudio.
The rules are set out in Etsy’s Seller Policy and Creativity Standards. You are responsible for making sure every item you list through ResaleStudio qualifies. We check that a listing has what Etsy’s API needs to create it, not whether the item belongs on Etsy.
What ResaleStudio does on Etsy
Once your shop is connected, ResaleStudio can:
- Connect your shop through Etsy’s own sign-in. Etsy uses OAuth (open authorization, a standard way to approve an app without handing over your password). You approve ResaleStudio on etsy.com and Etsy gives us a token to act on your behalf. We never see or store your Etsy password.
- Import your existing listings when you sync, so the inventory in ResaleStudio matches your shop. Listing details are refreshed each time you sync.
- Create a draft listing from an item in your inventory, then publish it from ResaleStudio when you are ready. Nothing goes live in your shop until you choose to publish it.
- Push edits to a listing’s title, description, price and quantity after you change them in ResaleStudio.
- Deactivate a listing from ResaleStudio.
- Keep quantities in step. When an item sells on eBay, we lower the Etsy quantity, or deactivate the Etsy listing when the last one goes. Sales are picked up on a 30-minute schedule, so expect up to half an hour between the sale and the update.
- Import your Etsy receipts into your order list, so eBay and Etsy orders sit side by side.
- Show analytics built from those orders. The fees shown are estimates, not Etsy’s bill.
- Refresh listing views about twice a day.
- Alert you (in the app, and by email if you turn that on) to new orders, low stock, listings deactivated because they sold out, sync problems, and a connection that needs renewing.
What ResaleStudio does not do on Etsy
Some things you may have seen in other tools are either not offered by Etsy or not part of ResaleStudio. On Etsy, ResaleStudio does not:
- Send offers to buyers. The Etsy API has no way to do it.
- “Bump” listings. Etsy does not offer this, and we do not try to imitate it.
- Change your auto-renewal setting. Etsy renews listings according to the setting in your shop; we leave it alone.
- Delete listings. We deactivate instead, so you can reactivate from Etsy if you change your mind.
Listing details Etsy requires
Etsy asks for more than a title and a price. Before an Etsy listing you created from ResaleStudio goes live, check that these details are right for the item.
Etsy requires every listing to say who made the item, when it was made, and whether it is a craft supply rather than a finished piece. Etsy uses those answers to decide whether the item fits its rules, so only send Etsy items that qualify as handmade, vintage (20 years or older) or supplies, and correct these details on the listing if they do not match the item.
- A category. ResaleStudio may suggest an Etsy category based on the eBay category you already use for the item. It is a suggestion: you can change it before you publish.
- A shipping profile from your Etsy shop. Set one up on Etsy first if you have none.
- A return policy from your Etsy shop, where Etsy asks for one.
Connect, reconnect and disconnect
Connect
Go to Settings → Marketplaces and choose Connect on the Etsy card. A window opens on etsy.com where you sign in, if you are not already, and approve the permissions ResaleStudio asks for. When the window closes, your shop shows as connected.
Reconnect
Now and then the Etsy card asks you to reconnect. There are two reasons: we have started asking for a permission that older connections did not include (reading receipts for your order list, for example), or Etsy has let the access it gave us expire. Reconnecting repeats the same approval step on etsy.com. Your products and orders in ResaleStudio are not affected.
Disconnect
Choose Disconnect on the Etsy card. Right away we delete the access tokens Etsy gave us and the Etsy listing records that link your products to your shop. Your products, your order history and your settings stay as they are, and nothing changes in your Etsy shop: disconnecting does not deactivate or delete any listing on Etsy.
Disconnecting removes the tokens stored with us; it does not withdraw the approval on Etsy’s side. To do that as well, revoke ResaleStudio’s access from your Etsy account settings.
Delete your data
To delete your ResaleStudio account and everything in it, including products, orders and marketplace connections, email info@resalestudio.com from the address you signed up with. We delete your data within 30 days and confirm when it is done.
Our Privacy Policy explains what we keep while your account is open and for how long.
